Ahead of Mosaic’s upcoming story on UA’s mascot conservation program, Tide for Tusks, By the Numbers takes a look at mascots across the country. We wanted to know which animals were the most common among NCAA Division I FBS football teams. Were more mascots in need of conservation? Ironically, some of the most common mascots are also the creatures with the smallest populations across the globe. While the cougar was the most common mascot, representing seven universities, 26 schools had unique mascots, including the University of Alabama.
